Typography
Typography is one of the most impactful elements in website design.
Many designers choose one or several font families with multiple variations and use them throughout the website. While this approach is not necessarily wrong, it can sometimes create inconsistency if not handled carefully.
A good website should maintain consistent typography. From my experience and what I learned from senior developers, most websites work best when they use two or three font families at most. In many cases, even two fonts are enough.
Font Pairing
Font pairing is another important aspect of typography. It means selecting fonts that visually complement each other.
For example, you might use Noto Serif for headings and Roboto for body text such as paragraphs, links, and blockquotes.
However, some font combinations do not work well together. Poor font pairing can make the design feel unbalanced or visually confusing.
Performance Considerations
Typography also affects website performance.
Not all fonts load at the same speed. Larger font files can increase page load time, especially when many variations are included.
Because of this, you should only include the font weights you actually need. For example, if your design only requires 400, 400 italic, and 700, there is no reason to load additional variations.
Font Size and Accessibility
Finally, be mindful of font sizes and readability. Your typography should respect the user's device settings and provide comfortable reading without requiring zooming or extra effort.
Readable typography improves accessibility and provides a better experience for all users.
