On-Page SEO Basics

On-page SEO refers to the elements you can control directly on your website to make your pages easier for search engines to understand and rank. These elements also improve the experience for your readers.

Here are the key on-page SEO basics that every website owner should know.

Title Tags

The title tag is the headline that appears in search engine results for your page. It should clearly describe what the page is about and include the main keyword naturally.

Example: “How to Improve Website Speed: 10 Practical Tips”

Keep title tags concise (around 50–60 characters) and compelling to encourage clicks.

Meta Descriptions

A meta description is a short summary of your page that appears below the title in search results. It should briefly explain what the page offers and include relevant keywords, but it should also read naturally for humans.

Example: “Learn 10 practical tips to improve your website speed, enhance user experience, and boost search rankings.”

While meta descriptions do not directly impact rankings, they influence click-through rates, which indirectly affect SEO.

Headings (H1–H6)

Headings organize your content into sections, making it easier for readers to scan and for search engines to understand.

H1: Main title of the page (usually appears once)

H2: Major sections

H3–H6: Subsections and details

Proper use of headings improves readability and signals the structure of your content to search engines.

Internal links are links from one page on your website to another. They help search engines discover your content and understand the relationship between pages. Internal linking also helps visitors navigate your site and find related information.

Example: On a blog about SEO, you might link “Keyword Research Basics” to your detailed keyword research page.

Image Alt Text

Alt text describes what an image shows. It improves accessibility for users who rely on screen readers and helps search engines understand the content of images. Always use descriptive, relevant text rather than generic phrases like “image1.”

Example: “Diagram showing how search engines crawl and index web pages.”

URL Structure

A clean and descriptive URL helps both users and search engines understand the page topic. Keep URLs short, readable, and include the main keyword if possible.

Example: www.example.com/seo/on-page-basics

Avoid long URLs with unnecessary numbers or symbols.

Key Idea

On-page SEO is about making your content clear, organized, and understandable for both humans and search engines. Paying attention to these basics—title tags, meta descriptions, headings, internal links, alt text, and URLs—improves your chances of being discovered and ranking well.
