Total number of websites historical data with up to 2021

As of August 2021, there are over 1.88 billion websites on the internet. The first website was created in 1991. In the next year 1992, there were only 10 websites around the globe. The ratio (highly) increased in 1993 and there were 623 websites.

In this post, I will give you all the numbers, statistics, and give you other related information.

Tim Berners-Lee created the first website on August 06, 1991. The name/URL of the world’s first website is http://info.cern.ch and it was made for the European Nuclear Research Agency (CERN).

After 1993, there were a lot of new websites were created. And a few of them are still active and well-known.

How many WordPress websites are there

According to Wikipedia, 42.8% of websites use WordPress as their CMS (among the top 10 million sites). If we take this percentage into consideration for all the 1.88 billion, then there are over 804 million WordPress websites around the internet.

However, though there are over 1.88 billion websites around the globe, most of them are not active. That means most of them have failed to operate. I did a study in 2019 to learn about website traffic. And I found that 94.3% of new websites get zero traffic.

People are registering new domains & creating websites every second. So no one can tell you the exact number of the total sites because it changes every second.

On the other hand, there are lots of websites/domains that expire. And some of them get renewals from other people.

So the total number is not accurate but these are very close. Also, someone else’s report may vary with my study. Because none of us have generated the report ourselves, nor do we have the ability for it.

Conclusion

All we did, was research and collect information from various sources. In this post, I collected data from many sources, compared them, and applied intuition to showcase the data that are most trusted & accurate. Therefore, it may still have inaccuracy.

For example, I wrote that there are over 804 million WordPress websites. However, few other sources have shown that there are 455 million WordPress sites.

Now the question is which data you should accept.

Well, I’m not a big fan of highlighting other people’s faults. Rather I can assure you that I used the most updated data, calculated & compared them, cross-checked them with historical data, and then published them here.

And of course, I will keep updating this data/post as time passes. If you have any suggestions to improve the data/information, I would highly appreciate it.
